Hearing Aids Experts Purpose

Hearing Aids Experts is here for the sole purpose of helping you to promote better hearing for your lifestyle. Approximately 30-40 million people in the US have some degree of hearing loss. Nearly 5-10 million people do something about this hearing loss. Hearing loss is gradual. It takes approximately 10 years for someone to notice that the hearing difficulty is due to decreased hearing. Most hearing loss is sensorineural which means nerve loss. This type of hearing loss can range from mild to profound. Hearing devices are designed for this kind of hearing loss. Hearing Aids should be chosen based on degree of hearing loss which can be determined by a hearing test (audiogram), lifestyle, and the ability of the person to handle the device with ease.

What are Hearing Aids?

Below are general descriptions of hearing aids, the technology within, and how they work.

Hearing aids are electronic devices that pick up, amplify certain sounds, and filter out other sounds. By amplifying sound, desired sounds that the wearer normally would not hear are increased in volume and therefore better communicated. Certain undesirable sounds like background noise that hinder desired hearing, may also be filtered out by the hearing aid.

There are many different degrees of hearing loss and technology has paved the way for many innovative products designed to improve a broad range of hearing.

Hearing Aid Components:

Microphones – A hearing aid may contain one or many microphones. These microphones gather sound and convert it to electrical impulses. More than one microphone collects sound from different areas.

Amplifier – An amplifier is used to increase the strength of the impulses that were received by the microphone in a hearing aid. The receiver then transforms the electrical impulses back into sound waves, amplifies or attenuates them, and redirects them into the ear of the wearer for better hearing of desired sounds.

Battery – A battery is used to supply the energy source that powers the hearing aid.

Other Hearing Aid Components:

Computer Chip (DSP) – A computer chip or digital sound processor is found in most programmable hearing aids. Think of this as a mini recording and playback studio.

Switches – There are switches on many hearing aids that turn the device on or off, allow for things like phone usage, or provide the ability to control the devices volume.

Programs – Programs offer various sounds for a variety of listening environments. These are controlled by the computer chip or DSP. As an example, one program may be for conversations, another for the telephone and a third for noisy environments or situations. A hearing aid can come with numerous programs and the wearer may manually change back and forth between different programs to bring about better hearing. Some hearing aids, usually more expensive models, also have the ability to switch between programs automatically.
